KeeperFX News

Dungeon Keeper was originally missing a lot of sounds, but KeeperFX has been gradually adding them over time. Recently, even more sounds have been restored.

To enjoy these additional sounds, you'll need a new sound.dat file. This file was bundled with KeeperFX versions 1.2.0.4206 through 1.2.0.4220, but due to its large size and the cost of hosting, it’s no longer included with newer alphas.

If you missed those specific versions but still want to hear the ghosts make noise before the 1.3 release, simply download the sound.dat file and extract it into your game directory. Only for use on the Alpha patches.

Enjoy the enhanced audio experience!

KeeperFX is highly moddable, and our users have a long history of changing the bundled configuration files for all kinds of madness. In the Alpha patches, you will now find some new TOML files, recognizable by the .toml file extension. These can be edited with any text editor the same way that .cfg files already could. And if you have a fancy one like Notepad++ or VSCode, there are plugins available to help you format them correctly.

All original Dungeon Keeper code has been rewritten, establishing KeeperFX as a true open-source standalone game. Ownership of the original game is still and will always be required for copyright reasons.

When installing KeeperFX 1.0, perform a fresh installation without overwriting any previous versions. Saved games cannot be migrated. There is a wiki that holds answers to most of the questions you may have, and we have a large and friendly discord community where we welcome all friendly new members.
