A difficult level where heroes will continue to stream in to attack you. Luckily you have time to prepare and a well stocked workshop.
- Creature Pool: Fly, Bug, Spider, Demon Spawn, Troll, Orc, Sorceror, Dark Mistress, Hell Hound
- Objects: Creatures: 0, Traps: 0, Doors: 0, Items: 81, Dungeon hearts: 2, Hero gates: 2, Special Boxes: 1
Frozen Legion was the last of Loobinex' map that was left for me to play. I was trying to avoid it for quite some time as I have often heard that it was supposed to be even more difficult than Thug of War.
Similar to most of Loobinex' maps, the player has to rely on the lower- to mid-tier creatures of the game. Also, the focus of this map is laid on traps in order to survive. Luckiliy, the player gets this piece of information through an in-game message right at the beginning, so there shouldn't be any unexpected surprises.
I had quite a bit of trouble in the beginning with managing creature drops, placing traps, putting back creatures into the workshop and most importantly having an eye on my imps who seemed to have been particularly eager to get killed by heroes in this map. Like moths attracted by light they seemed to be all too happy to get as close to the heros as possible. Moreover, money became an issue for me later on, causing me quite some issues with sticking to paydays.
All in all, I would say that this map as by far not as challenging as Thug of War but still provides sufficient enough challenge for players through the need for multi-tasking or in my case someones who is not used to make use of traps. It gives the well deserved spotlight to creatures one would usually discard for stronger ones which keeps the playstyle of this map interesting and refeshing in contrast to the conventional Misstress/Bile Demon/Dragon /Horned Reaper playstyle from other, in particular older maps. Also, there are no unfair or "bullshit"-moments. No masses of level 10 enemies or whatsoever. Frozen Legion therefore delivers a great and engaging atmosphere, keeps you on your toes and rewards you for being clever, mean or just resilient. It gives you the feeling that every creature in your dungeon fulfills it's role and matters. And it makes you feel good when you finally beat it.
The only downside for me is that there are simply too many good Loobinex' maps and in direct comparison to others, such as the previously mentioned Thug of War or other gems like Shackled Hand or Ghost in a Shell (or was it "the" shell?) I would still say that it was just a tiny tiny bit inferior to those ;-).
Great level!
